Our modernized world comes with certain trade-offs. Everywhere you turn, huge objects built for our convenience dot the landscape and obscure the sky. Often, these objects seem to be an insult to our natural world, but upon closer inspection , one can discover aesthetic beauty in their structure and comfort in their familiarity.

MacDonald Bridge

I have loved the bridges between Halifax and Dartmouth, NS since I first saw them. . .the colors and the simple grace caught my imagination. I finally painted one of them and lordy, it took much much longer to paint than my usual paintings! Still had fun painting it and I will probably try some others, maybe a lino-cut? :)

So my studio is finally clean (mostly) so I actually have space to paint! Here are a couple of my newest paintings:

There's also a lot going on with the gallery as our 1st "birthday" is coming up and we have some big plans for that, the most exciting being our "clean out the studio" Art Sale on August 8th (more info HERE).

So I have been VERY delinquent in updating my blog, I also haven't been painting up a storm lately but I did just return from a fabulous trip to Bali :)

Life is Good

I haven't been painting as much as I'd like recently but I have been doing tons o' interesting stuff lately as well :) Definitely starting to get the Spring urge to plant things, ride my bicycle, and generally loaf around my back yard!
I have also been enjoying my life as an active part of my community. I am currently volunteering with a group of others one afternoon a week at Learning Works (formerly Portland West) doing art/craft projects with the after school program. I'm also a member of a local food buying club called Foodnow which is part of the Portland Food Coop group . . .more details in another post :)

And of course spending lots of time at SKG, we has a bunch of interesting events coming up! To keep up to date on that find us on facebook (Sylvia Kania Gallery).

I will get back into the studio because there really isn't any excuse not too :)

My latest piece: Connectivity, 31"x22" made up of approx 50 face painted in acrylic on paper and sewn(both machine and hand)

Currently on view at the Sylvia Kania Gallery as part of our most recent curatorial experiment: Art and Society. We have an opening reception Thursday March 5th from 6-8pm as well as our usual first Friday festivities on March 6th featuring music by Frank Hopkins.

Well folks, I am less than 24 hrs from leaving cold cold Maine for somewhat warmer Northern Spain! We are spending 3 weeks in our favorite little town, Mundaka. I'm looking forward to taking tons of photos and hopefully doing a bunch of paintings as well . . .I'll keep you posted if WiFi is readily available :) Here are a few pics from the last time we went to Mundaka:

I've been working on a series of very small paintings on paper, ranging in size from 3"x4" on 5"x5". My plan is to assemble them into a quilt of sorts once I have enough of them (I'm shooting for around 100-150 individual faces) Here's a few examples:

The brass fish was one of my mother-in-laws (Rusty's) favorite possessions, I should remember the story behind it but I don't :/
Anyway, now we have it and I really love painting it. I love how the character changes so dramatically depending on the perspective and the colors, I'm sure there will be more "Fishy" paintings, the small 5x7"s were very fun to paint.
